Conference: August 22-24, 2016
Summer School of Audiovisual Translation: August 24 (late afternoon) – August 26, 2016

Objectives of the conference: to encourage the development of audiovisual translation both in Russia and the world, to form the basis for systematic work on maintaining Russia’s linguistic and cultural identity in the face of a changing information space, and to provide a framework for immunity against disruptive technologies of audiovisual discourse:

• Studying key issues in linguistic and translation theory for the purposes of audiovisual translation (AVT).
• Properly translated films, series, and games assist in maintaining linguistic and cultural identity of the country and, as a soft power tool, in projecting its image outwards.
• Issues in developing theoretical and practical aspects of AVT in Russia and the world.
• Teaching audiovisual translation in a higher school for Bachelor’s and Master’s students and selling AVT as a separate translation service.
• The conference is followed by seminars in Summer School of Audiovisual Translation, with the program announced later by the School of Audiovisual Translation.

Timing — 20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes discussion.

Abstracts should include brief summary of the paper (250-300 words with no subheadings) and clearly state the problem in question, give a critical literature review, methodology, findings and conclusions.
Please submit your abstracts in PDF.
If you wish to include any specific symbols (such as phonetic transcription), please submit your paper both in DOC and PDF.
Registration fee (includes the conference program, coffee breaks, publication of the materials, and visa support (if needed)):
• Early-bird registration (before June 1, 2016) – 2000 rubles, or 30 euros; students – 800 rubles
• Regular registration (after June 1, 2016) – 2500 rubles, or 35 euros; students – 1000 rubles

The program of the School

Summer School of Audiovisual Translation includes a three-day training course from August 24 to August 26, 2016. It is designed for the following groups of participants, with the following topics (duration of training is approximately 10 academic hours):

  • Managers of translation companies (Audiovisual translation and the basics of selling it)
  • University educators (Audiovisual translation and the basics of teaching it in a higher school)
  • Students (Basics of audiovisual translation)

School of Audiovisual Translation engages educators of their own as well as foreign specialists (Tiina Holopainen (University of Turku), Olga Davis (Great Britain)) in teaching during the Summer School.

By the end of Summer School, the School of Audiovisual Translation will issue a Certificate of Completion of the further education courses. Payment for participating in Summer School must be transferred to the bank account of the School of Audiovisual Translation.

5) Translating for subtitles. Training in analyzing different ways to translate subtitles.
6) Translating for voice-over: main strategies. Training in analyzing different strategies to translate for voice-over.
